"Long before chatGPT, before calculators, even before paper and pencils there was math...
Our junior/senior math class recently learned how to calculate with numbers in different bases, such as binary, ternary, octal, hexadecimal, etc. This seemed like an excellent time to introduce some ancient mathematics!
Students were given a list of topics to choose from:
Egyptian numbers and multiplication by doubling
Egyptian numbers and division by doubling
Egyptian unit fractions
Mayan base 20 number system
Babylonian base 60 number system
Roman numerals
Chinese counting boards (matrix system) for arithmetic
Each student researched their chosen ancient mathematical system and prepared a lesson. Over the last few days, each student became an ELA Math teacher and taught our class in English how to calculate using ancient mathematical methods!
It was wonderful for the teacher to be a student in their classes! They did an amazing job presenting their lessons and helping their ""students"" overcome difficulties.
It's safe to say that we all have a fresh appreciation for our modern mathematics now that we've learned more about our ancient mathematical foundations!"
