As a math and science teacher, it was gratifying to see our students interact with the new science equipment. Sometimes the most meticulously planned lesson is not as successful as exploring the new lab supplies that arrived in the science lab this week. While unboxing may seem like a simple task, it became an organic lesson with engagement, curiosity, and teamwork.

The students have been eagerly anticipating these materials, and they treated each object and its instructions with care. As the students unwrapped each piece of equipment, each was attentive to keeping the materials in good condition. Even as they did some light experimentation and assembly, they acted as stewards of the lab with a professional bearing.

Assembling the track was a team effort. As the written instructions were not very clear, and the illustrations only moderately helpful, students put their problem-solving skills to work. There were several failed attempts, but no one stopped trying. When we finally were able to click the track pieces together, we all were fully engaged and shared in the feeling of success. Later, when we were exploring putting other things together, everyone was communicating- questioning, helping, wondering, and giving advice.

Encountering these physics materials showed that our students are inquisitive learners. Many of the objects are new to everyone, so there was much wonder and a fair bit of experimentation. One of the most experimented with objects were the cars that go on the track. They come assembled with magnetic bumpers, which can be changed out for other attachments. Curious students quickly found out that the magnetic bumpers on each of the two cars repel each other, causing the cars to exert force on one another.

Looking back on our unboxing of the new physics equipment, I am looking forward to running our first real lab experiments in the new semester. The great thing about experimenting with physical objects is that once an answer is found, there are inevitably more questions to investigate, and the students have already generated so many questions that we want to understand better. I have a feeling lab days are going to be highly anticipated by all!
